Cambridge Computer Joins Clemson’s Inaugural HPC/AI Day

Clemson, SC – September 26, 2025 – Cambridge Computer delivered a keynote at Clemson University’s first-ever HPC/AI Day, joining researchers, students, and industry leaders for a day dedicated to showcasing the growing role of high performance computing and AI across campus.

The event, hosted by Clemson’s Computing and Information Technology division, brought together 220 attendees to highlight student research and build community around HPC and AI at the university. The keynote focused on the hardware and software that enable modern computational science, grounded in a real and impactful research problem.

Flow through porous media shows up everywhere, from engineered systems to biology to the environment. Simulating it accurately is one of the harder problems in computational science, and very few groups in the world build and maintain their own simulators capable of tackling it at scale. That’s a niche where Cambridge has built real depth.

The talk centered on a recent hero run on the University of Florida’s HiPerGator supercomputer, scaling a Cambridge-built fluid dynamics simulator across 512 NVIDIA A100 GPUs while holding 90% efficiency. In practical terms, the computation was 512 times larger than what a single GPU could handle, with almost none of the usual performance lost along the way.

The talk was meant to inspire as much as inform. Large scale GPU systems are still out of reach for many research computing environments, and the goal was to give the audience a concrete sense of what that kind of investment can unlock scientifically, from resolving problems that CPU based systems alone struggle to handle to opening up entirely new classes of research.

Cambridge also joined a panel that day on careers in HPC and AI, alongside Dan Stanzione of the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC).
