Storage Virtualization: Exploring the State of the Art
Abstract
With all
of the recent excitement over server virtualization, there is suddenly
a newfound buzz in the industry over storage virtualization. While
there is a clear definition for server virtualization, there are many
competing definitions for what it means to virtualize storage. This
lecture compares the architectures of many leading storage virtualization
paradigms while revealing the features and benefits of each major
approach. The end goal is to give attendees a model by which they
can compare and contrast storage solutions and ultimately chose the
best approach for their environment.
Topics
Include
•
Basics of Storage Virtualization: The Storage I/O Path •
In-band SAN Volume Virtualization • Out of Band and Host-Based
Volume Virtualization • LAN-based Storage Virtualization
• Disk Spindle Virtualization • Integrating Snapshots
and Replication • ILM and Automated Storage Tiers
• Green Storage (power conservation) • Disk Aggregation
for Maximum Performance
Intended
Audience
The lecture
is geared toward a technical audience with at least some prior hands-on
experience with servers, storage devices, and network devices. The
class focuses on architecture (as opposed to command line syntax)
so it is suitable for system architects, and network managers all
the way up to the CIO.
